Will the rear from a 70's 1/2 ton van fit under a 1985 D-150? Will it be to narrow?

Is "I don't know" helpful?

P. S. - got a measuring tape? ;)

I'm sure someone will be along to help shortly. If not, call a junkyard and have them look it up in the interchange manual if you don't have access to measure both.

Another question, did the D-150 and the D-100 have different bolt patterns?

Well, the answer to that is easy, it's a definite "no". 100 and 150 were just minor trim differences. Same truck. 1/2 ton.

Now, the bolt patern was changed in either '85 or '86 (I can't remember which) on all half-tons. Went from 4.5" to 5.5"

The D100 is a /12 ton. The D150 was called a heavy 1/2 ton. The load capacity was between a 1/2 ton and the 3/4 ton.

That's the first I've heard that, but sounds plausible...

Yep, and IIRC, D-100s came with the 8 1/4 rear end (standard, you could opt for a bigger one). D-150s, however, came with the 9 1/4 rear standard. My /6 powered D-150 has the factory 9 1/4 under it.

Hmmmm, never heard that either, I swear I've seen 8.25's under D-150s (matter of fact most of what I come across from the eighties are D-150, seems like). Doesn't mean I haven't been mistaken, and what I know about Dodge trucks is fairly limited. I'm in need of a 9.25 for my '88, jeb. Wanna sell yours? ;) (I need the 5.5" bp)

Sorry Dennis, this truck has the 4.5 Bolt pattern and it belongs to a friend. Guy let his son drive it and he broke the ring gear showing off.

Hi,
My 82 D150 has an 8.25 under it(aka eight and three eights) factory slant and a833.
We also own an 83 D150 with an 8.25 factory 318,727.
Also own an 81 D150 parts truck (318,727) that has a 9.25 under it-no rhyme or reason as to what truck came with what rear.
Good Luck

Thanks for shedding more light and additional evidence on this situation. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, I've done research and come up inconclusive. About half at some of the truck message boards say as I have always thought, that the D-100 was just the plebian (stripped down) model and the 150 was a little more optioned and stylish. The other half say as kesteb does that it has a slightly higher capacity. I'm leaning more toward the first thing, since the 8.25 is a very light-duty rear for a truck, and now I am more convinced I was not smoking crack all those times I saw 8.25's in D-150's in eighties Dodge trucks.

It would be interesting to know why what truck recieved what rearend.....the 82 D150 I have with the slant is what I would consider the stripped down no option version. My wifes late Uncle purchased it new and I have the window sticker from it. The 82's options (besides the slant and OD trans) were as follows:power steering(no power brakes), pinstripe, AM radio and thats all. The rearend gearing is 3:55.
The 83 is a loaded up model. Factory Air, cruise, power steering and brakes, AM/FM stereo. 2:94 rear gear.
The parts truck is also loaded up with options as the 83. It also has power windows and locks. The 9.25 rear has 3:21 gears (if memory serves me correctly.

Van rear under a truck? Don't know that one. Post some measurements of your van rear, brake drum to brake drum and spring perch to spring perch, so we can compare rears.
I have early truck 8.75" rears in my '82 D150 and '84 D100. A lot of the rears from '68-'93 can be exchanged. Below are a few drive axle facts.
The 5.5" bolt pattern started in '85 for all D100, D150, W100, W150.
The 4.5" pattern was used from '75-'84 for all D100, D150, W100, D150 and on '74 down D100.
The '74-down W100 used 5.5" pattern which will make a good substitute for '85-'93 D100, D150, W100, W150.
The D150 and W150 came about around '75 or '76 for it's unleaded gas exemption because they didn't have catylitic convertors. They had a slightly higher GVW that excluded them from convertors. This exemption lasted till '78, the '79 D150/W150 had convertors and required unleaded. The GVW/convertor/unleaded exemption was raised thru the years, by '85 only the D350 was exempt and by '93 even the Cummins diesel had convertors.
8.25" rears were used in most D150s, most V8 D150s received 9.25" rears. BTW, the 9.25", 5.5"BP axles can be used in an earlier 9.25" housing by grinding the C clips down to the same thickness as the early C clips.

Lotsa good info, thanks. Do you know if there was any difference in GVWR between an '88 D-100 and D-150 since the manufacturer was no longer getting the exemption by that time? If so, what is the difference? Rear springs?
