hi all i have issues w/ my slant. i rebuilt it. had it punched 40 out. put a 2bbl arb on it. now it has a hesitation when you stomp on it. i cant time it out and i have had two different new vacuum advances on it. it is better with this one but not gone. i am at a loss. i put a fuel pressure gauge in it to make sure of the fuel pressure. 5lbs. any ideas. i am thinking of putting a comp cam in w/ a set of larger valves. any help would be appreciated. thanks much. -TS |

It could be a vacuum leak at the intake or carb or PCV valve. I had a nasty leak last spring at the intake and it damn near drove me mad till I figured it out!! It wouldn't downshift, had a BIG bog off the line and would back fire when I stomped on it. I tried new plugs, wires, coil, rebuilt the carb, switched the carb, changed the timing, you name it. Tried everything I could think of until I found a serious leak at the #4 intake runner. Just my 2 cents worth, |

Have you had a vacuum gauge on it? What was the reading? Was the needle steady or did it bounce? DD |

The best $20 I spent was on a vacuum gauge and a 3' length of hose from the Auto parts store. It will tell you a lot about what is going on with your engine. -D.Idiot |

The accelerator pump might not be working. With the engine OFF and COLD, operate the throttle while listening to the carburator. You should hear some squirting sounds. If it's working, you still might be getting too much or too little gas per "squirt" - there's usually an adjustment you can make to vary the amount. |

DD assume i had a vac gauge- where would i put it to read my vac? what should it read? are vac leaks the only thing that can affect that? what does it mean if the needle does bounce? thanks in advance -Randy |

Put the gage on anything that is directly connected to the intake manifold. You have a vacuum port in the no.6 runner, with hoses to the brake booster, and other stuff, or use one at the bottom of the carb. They tell you a lot of different things, and more people should have them... |

An easy way to find a vacuum leak is to either spray a combustible liquid (like carb cleaner) or propane from a (unlit) torch at the various openings on the intake manifold. If the RPMs suddenly increase, you've found the source of the vacuum leak. Be careful with sparks and open flames when spraying around the engine. Frank |

I used carb cleaner around the intake runners. Be sure to spray it on ALL sides of the runners. I missed my intake leak the first two times I checked because it was on the bottom of the #4 runner and I only sprayed on the top of the runners. Ah, supid is as stupid does! |
