The oil pump is not loose at all. Could it be stuck on this hard? Or, is the pickup tube what's holding it? How do I unscrew the oil pump. I don't want to damage it.

Thanks,

dave

The pickup screws into the engine block, not the pump. Yes, it's stuck. Try carefully prying or rapping on it with a hammer and a long piece of wood.

Dennis, Thanks once again for your help. What about the pickup tube? I see no flats to use a wrench. Will vice grips work? I don't have a "monkey" wrench.

If you're careful not to distort it, you can usually get it to turn by grabbing the big end, sometimes holding it with a rag helps. Be careful if you have to use tools on the tube itself - you dont want to crack it.

Thanks very much. I think I'm pretty much finished for the day anyway. But I might slip out to the garage afterwhile and see if I can get things to budge. Thanks very much.

dave

PS: It does appear that the pump was working somewhat. There appears to be plenty of oil on the crank, and the oil filter was full when I pulled it off. So, hopefully, nothing is hurt. I think I'll replace the pressure sending unit as well - just to be on the safe side.
The big end of the pickup tube was somewhat nestled in "crud" in the bottom of the pan, leaving an indention in the "crud". I can't see the screen yet, so don't know just how plugged up it might be. I'm going to have the pan, valve cover and maybe the pickup tube hot tanked to get everything cleaned up good.

You could try a oilfilter wrench(the strap-type) to get the pickup off.

Oh, Yeah! I just remembered that I have a couple of those strap wrenches. I'll try one of them.

Thanks for reminding me - LOL!
