Post subject:  What's up with these rear ends?

Just got back from looking at a couple of '62 model cars. One was a Plymouth Valiant and the other was a Dodge 440. They both had rear ends that look strangely like the 8-3/4", with no bolts on the "dog dish-looking" backside of the differential. What are they and would they be a viable replacement for the 7-1/4" in Aaron's '74 Dart Sport we are working on?

I want to say those early axles are an odd-ball size, like 8 3/8" or some thing like that. Could be wrong. :shock: :wink: Anybody else?

Don't those early axles have funky drums held down by a single nut in the center similar to front drums?

I would keep looking, I'm sure you'll find a suitably priced 8.25 or 8.75" Keep looking around the yards. I'm not sure how far they are away from you but call up www.TexasAcres.com or www.Texastoybox.com

Those are 8.75" rears, they got the retaining nut on the axles, keep looking!

texas acres had a 8.25 when i called them last a few months ago. they want around 350 for it. good luck finding a rear, ive been looking for one as well. not much luck here sw of ft worth. if u find an extra id be interested.

Thanks for your replies fellows. I took the 7-1/4" to a shop today to get freshened up (new pinion and axle seals, check bearings and gears, sandblasting, and priming).

See if you can locate a posi-unit on e-bay. These make the tiny 7 1/4 able to stand up to even a 318.

good luck finding a posi for the 7.25, i think ive only seen one and ive been an ebayer for a while now.

Jeb is correct about the posi (oops) sure grip, really making a difference in the strengh of the 7 1/4 rear. I ran a 7 1/4 SG for years, untill I upgraded to a 8 3/4 i 2003. I ran a 3.91 for the 1/4 and a 5.13 for the 1/8 in two different rears. But the 7 1/4 SG is hard to find. Just have to keep looking. My spare SG unit, took me over 2 years to find.
PS: the 7 1/4 rears will be going back into service this year.
