Post subject: | Follow up - 5 or 6 bolt oil pump |
I just got back and picked up a new pump. It is a 5 bolt pump. Mine was a 6 bolt, but the new pump says I can use it with the 6 bolt gasket, which came with it. Will this really work, or do I need to take it back and go to a different store for a 6 bolt pump? If I really can use the 5 bolt pump, NOW do I need to put some sealer on the gasket surfaces? dave |

All you can get today is the 5 bolt pump as far as I know. Yes, the 6 bolt gasket should work, just be sure to put it on the right way, you can install it wrong. Gasket sealer??? The gasket IS the seal. Just be sure all the old gasket is cleaned off the block surface. |

OK, thanks guys. Just wanted confirmation. Checker shows on their web site a 6 bolt pump, but I had a gift card for Auto Zone, so that's where I went. I realize that the gasket is the sealer, but I also use a sealant (ultra blue) for things like water pumps. Just wondered if I needed any on the oil pump. Obviously, I don't. Thanks very much. dave |

The five-bolt is a slightly higher volume pump to boot D/W |

Oh, cool! I did notice that the replacement 5 bolt pumps have thicker pumping members than the old original stock pumps. The "high volume" pumps have thicker rotors still.D/W I suspect the 5 bolt pump with slightly thicker rotors was phased in when the slants went to hydraulic lifters?? That explains why my 1975 engine (rebuilt by me years go) still has 40-50 psi oil pressure at slow idle after 80, 000 miles on it. |

5 or 6 bolt... i always just center punch mark the 5 bolt pumps using the gasket for hole placement for the 6th hole and drill away. just gives me piece of mind. ron |

Post subject: | 5 vs. 6 bolt |
My five bolt pump has the boss there for the 6th bolt, but I'd probably mess it up trying to drill it out. I'm taking the oil pan, pickup tube and valve cover to my buddy at the machine shop in the morning to get everything hot tanked and cleaned up real nice. I imagine I will be changing the oil quite frequently for a while to make sure all the "junk" is out of the engine and doesn't plug up the screen again. dave |
