Slant Six Forum :: Where's the ignition module on a 1986 D150?

If you have a slant in an 85 truck, it is probably not the original, they quit making slants in 84

I live in Jacksboro, TN. When I bought the truck the Smog Pump had already been removed. I'm also thinking about taking off the Catalytic and running a straight pipe.

So, you think it's maybe a spark problem as well, and I need to look at replacing the ditstributor?

I have a 1986 D150 225 /6. I have replaced the carb. fuel lines, fuel filter and fuel pump. Now it runs until warmed up or under a load like going up a hill, then it stalls and dies and if I wait about 10-15 min. it'll start. It does not have a very strong spark, it's orange or red, not blue but the coil is not getting hot. I suspect the ignition module but don't know where it is. I think it's mounted right on the firewall, but the connector has three pins and looks way different than the part at Advance auto or OReilly's.

The thing you're looking at on the firewall isn't the ignition module, it's an EGR temperature sensor.

The primitive spark control computer on the late Slant-6s is known for causing poor driveability and running faults.

Last year for volume-production Slant-6s in trucks and vans elsewhere (e.g. Mexico) was 1991 or so. Last year for Slant-6s in passenger cars was 1983. Topherice: Where do you live and what kind of emission laws do you have to comply with? The thing you're looking at on the firewall isn't the ignition module, it's an EGR temperature sensor. If your local emission laws allow it, you'll want to retrofit a standard electronic distributor instead.

A Federal crime, but if it's not enforced in your area, you might as well -- with the air pump gone, the cat is useless and probably melted internally. I little more information about your truck would be helpful. Automatic or manual transmission? Federal or California emissions? Most likely your truck has a ESA (Electronic Spark Advance) computer, not a electronic control module. 1986 and 1987 trucks have the computer mounted (hanging) inside the fender alongside the battery. You should find it there. Look for a fat wire harness and a vacuum hose going to it. From your description of a weak red/orange spark and engine stalling after it gets hot...... I would suspect the ignition coil. It could be breaking down inside and those are typical symptoms of that. I would try a different coil first. Also might be a good idea to check all the connections in the wiring for a loose or corroded connection (if a different coil does not fix the problem) but that may be a big job to find all of them. Contrary to popular (opinion / belief / misconception / misinformation) in this forum........ The ESA computer on the 1986-87 trucks is a really nice unit. Keep it working. Also if you have an automatic transmission, the ESA computer controls the lock-up torque converter in the transmission. 1986-87 Slant 6 trucks are the only slant 6 engine to come from the factory with a electronically controlled lock-up torque converter. If you ditch the ESA computer, you loose the lock-up torque converter feature.

Also there are no EGR electronic control boxes on the firewall for this vehicle either. Any electronic EGR timer/control function is now incorporated in the ESA computer (which controls the solenoid over by the right side hood hinge for EGR timer delay function). Well, Sandy, y'know, that's the burden that comes with picking a board handle that starts with the letter "D".
