I have a 87 Dodge Ram D 150. I can not find any marks on the pumpkin it to determine what gears ratio it might have. there are 12 blots holding the cover plate on and it is 12" across. the cover plate is painted blue. I suspect that it may have the 4/2 ratio because it seems to be out of breath at about 60 mph and it is hard on gas. I did the super six conversion on it last summer. I would like to know what I have if anyone can help, also do I need to change the whole axal or just the gears?

4/2?? :? What's that?

Sounds like you have a 9-and-a-quarter. Ratio is likely 3.91 or 3.55

Where are you located? I just so happens I need a rearend meeting this description and will consider taking off your hands if you'd like to sell!

Thanks for the Info, however, this is a daily driver/project truck so I don't want to sell parts. I am looking for ways to save on gas, it is a /6 with AT.
The fellow at the junk yard said that this truck came with a 4:2 ratio rear end. That was what I was going by. He said that there should be some sort of tag or stamping on the pumpkin to ID it.
By the way I live in upstate NY.

Never, ever go by what toothless junkyard dwellers tell you!

4:2 = 2:1 = bull$#!+

Lemme guess, he had a cigarette permanently stuck in his upper lip when he said it to you...

Anyway, if you're not happy with the ratio you have, you can change it, but it's much easier for the average person without special tools to swap out the whole rear (axles, everything) from a donor truck than set up a new gear in your current housing. If you can find a guy who know's what he's doing (check with others for whom he's set up gears, and see how they came out) and has the right tools, you could have just the ring and pinion gears changed (and the bearings while you're at it).

By the way, you can find your ratio for sure by pulling the back cover, draining the goop and look for a stamping on the circumference of the ring gear. An easier way is to jack up one rear wheel, turn it exactly 2 turns (jack up both rear wheels and turn them one turn if it is limited slip diff) and count how many driveshaft revolutions. A piece of chalk will help you in this endeavor.
