I have a 63 Valiant pushbutton trans. The engine is a iron 225 from some unknown year (date code seems to be 1966). The Flex plate holes do not line up with the torque converter bolt pattern. You can get one bolt started but all others are not lined up. I have rotated the torque converter around 1 hole at a time several revolutions but it just doesn't line up.
The factory manual talks about lining upan arrow on the torque converter (arrow is there) with a 1/8" hole on the flex plate 9hole is not there.
What's up?
If I get the flex plate of the old 170 will the 225 be in balance? I assume that the offset is designed to for balancing reasons?

Thanks for any help.

As far as I know, You can use any slant six flexplate on any slant six engine, as long as the years are 67 down, or 68 up. But that is for fitting on the engine. The bolt pattern for the convertor did not change. There might be a difference, for a 727 converter, but I don't think so. You should not be having a problem, with what you have. Try it again, but don't tighten any of the bolts, untill they are all started.

I can get 2 bolts in only, the other 2 are offset ~ 1/8" to the side. This is after rotating in 90 deg increments many times.
What happens when you have an early torque converter with a late flex plate?
I read in my Hollander interchange that there was an R suffix engine ser. # in 63 that is different, but I don't know how it's different. The R is apparently like 60-62 engines.

Again, thanks for any help.

The mismatch in flex plates, is not with the converter. 1967 and prior used a smaller flange and hole in the end of the crank, then the 1968 and newer. The flexplate must match the engine.
I have no idea what Hollender is refering to.

Is there a chance that you have the flex plate on backwards?
The flexplate has a shallow cup shape to it and the dip of the cup fits over the crank flange, making the converter bolt holes move forward, closer to the engine block.
