I just inherited two different Sears Engine Analyzers and I haven't been able to get them to work.

The first one is the large box that has several different plugs. I guess its the "deluxe" one from probably 15 years ago. It looks new, but my dad has never used it. I read the directions, and plugged in the blue spark plug pickup wire. I clamped this to the #1 plug and turned the dial to rpms and got diddly! I didn't see that I had to have it connected to the battery or anything else, so I'm just scratching my head. No problem, I dig deeper in the box of gifts to find Sears Engine Analyzer #2--a smaller version.

#2 has two leads for the battery, then a green alligator clip, and then two female clips that have a metal bar between them that look like they *might* clamp to an ignition coil. This one has no directions or anything else, and googlin' it didn't help.

Anyone have one of these and care to direct me in its use? Thanks in advance! Other toys in the parental garage sale care package--timing light, remote starter, and other "old car" stuff. Ah what $5 buys you (if it works!)

Have you tried the Sears parts site? They might have the instruction manual available, if you have the model number.

I have a Sears engine analyze. It has two battery clamp large clips that I connect directly to the battery, then it has a green aligator clip that goes to the plus side of the coil. That gives me RPMs. There are also two other connections which I believe are for setting dwell but I have electronic ignition and so I leave those disconnected. I only use the analyzer for RPMs. I just bought it a few months ago. I'll look tonight for the part number. Mine has a nice big analog meter which gives nice accurate RPM readings. I like mine.

You got it! plus side of the coil...I'll give that a try. Wonder if that's my problem with the big box analyzer as well.

Here's a small pic of mine:

Thx!
