Strange how some asks a question about the speedometer head in the dash, and they get all kinds of answers from people telling how they lubed their speedometer cable.

Has anyone taken their speedo head apart to remove the old grease, and lubricate the mechanism? Any tips? My 64 Valiant hasn't driven in 32 years, and I expect the lubrication is pretty dried up. |

Mine started acting up and I sprayed lock graphite in. I haven't had a problem yet. |

I used PB Blaster, slid the cable out also, wiped it down, blasted the housing & speedo head area, it has worked great since. Some days have been at the 0 degree mark so it has been tested. This was on a 62 toad |

It is a very simple procedure. I've done it on two cars recently. Disconnect speedo cable from the back of the dash. Pull it down where you can see it and you'll see the inner wire cable sticking out of its sheath. Pull it out. Wipe it down thoroughly to get all the rusty crap and old grease etc off. Others have their favorite lubrication I suppose, but I just coat the cable with vasoline. Stick it back into the sheath until you are sure it is all the way in, reattach to the your dash and you are good to go. Whole operation shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes, tops. |

I answered my own question in the past day. My cable was junk (kinked), and had a new one made for less than $40. Also, had the head tested, dismantled, lubed, and tested for $60. I also took a spare apart for curiousity'e sake, and I noted a fabric wick where oil should be applied near where the cable attaches. Next time I will try applying oil to it before taking to a shop. |

Hello. I have just "dissected" the speedometer in my 70 D100. It was seized but is now freed up thanks to PB Blaster. So what kind of oil goes in the wick? |

Don't know for sure, but I would use a light machine oil, like 3 in 1, or sewing machine oil. |
