| Post subject: | Unfreeze a stuck distributor shaft? |
Hello all, I just got a NOS elec. ign. distributor and the shaft is frozen. I've tried spraying kroil and KB Blaster into the the slots above the gear and removing the foam ring and spraying in the top. Neither was sucessful in getting the shaft to move. Are there some other tricks anyone can share? Thanks in advance MJ |

Let it really soak for some time? Maybe take off the gear, and try to wiggle the shaft loose, and bang it on the axle end? |

Well i'm leaving today for two days, so i poured more in and left it upside down. The gear looks like a little tiny allen wrench to remove--any tricks that I need to be aware of? Ooh! Banging on it! I think if I remove the gear I might have a better time of it. Perhaps I better get one of those case hardened ones while i'm at it so I don't FUBAR this whole thing. Thanks! MJ |

I think most dists has a little pin-thing (like a small piece of tubing) to hold the gear on the shaft. if you get that one out, you have a hole on the shaft, try to stick a drill bit or something in the hole and turn it. I don´t like banging on stuff either, but it is a solid steel shaft, but try tapping (on the end) if you like that word better. Just don´t bang it up into the mechanical stuff in the top. |

put an old rotor on the top post to get some better grip on the shaft. Don't worry if the weights and springs flex, you won't hurt anything. If you snap the plastic rotor in half, then the distributor must be pretty rusted. You could use the internals to rebuild a points distributor into an electronic if it's that bad. The parts easily interchange in my experience, and you only need to cut a notch for the wires in the points distributor body. |

It doesn't appear to be rusted--its NOS and was sealed in a box. Just hasnt' been turned in forever! Any other suggestions as to where/how to lubricate? MJ |

hi, the original assembly lube/grease has congealed/dried out . take apart, pull shaft, clean out old lube and put it back together with fresh lube. i never trust the lube that is in a new "old" part. ron |

Kroil freed it all up, should I disassemble and lube now as well or will it be good to go? MJ |
