Now here's something you definitely don't find every day: a 3-door Valiant! |

Gotta be a custom job. It's a clever one, to be sure! Reminds me of the factory full-size styling clays that often were done up as "half and half" mockups to study the 2dr and 4dr styling of a car, or look at two different sets of design options, etc. But those aren't driveable cars, and this one is! |

My guess would be a testcar for a safety thing, so the passengers dont go out into the road. Or just too much beer in the garage... |

I believe '60s Mopars share most design parameters so that it would be practical to convert a station wagon to 2 door if you found a 2-door post donor car. I believe the rockers and roof panel is the same on most Mopars of this era. With the popularity of '62-65 Max Wedge B clones several of the four door cars have been converted to 2 door posts. I bet the conversation would also work with a station wagon A-body. |

Your latter guess is much more likely. Safety test cars were still a decade in the future when the cars that got cut together to make this one were new.
Or just too much beer in the garage... |

Kaiser-Frazer did build a "true" three door sedan, called Traveller, it was more or les´s what you today might call a hatchback, trunklid upened downwards and tthe rear window and fram upwards. To provide enough cargo space, the spare tire was located insde the left rear door, which was shut-welded, on later models, not even that was done, they simply locked the door at the plant and removed the knob! |

That is not too difficult to do with a 1963-66 Valiant or Dart. The rooflines are shared so it would be possible to take a 4-door sedan and convert one side to a 2-door. The 1961-62 Valiant 2-door actually used the 4-door sedan opening and welded the 2-door B pillar and quarter section in place. Chrysler did build a Valiant in 1963 as a prototype with a V-200 4-door sedan on the passenger side and a Signet hardtop on the driver's side, as well as front and back. It was used at press introductions and updated for 1964, 1965 and 1966. They also built a Fury 4-door sedan /2-door hardtop for press time. But this one is not a factory job. I saw photos of it a couple of years ago and the one either did it himself or bought it from the person who did. |

That is something new, a failed experiment, or just too much time and nothing else to do. |

Not a bad idea if you have kids... At least if you want to keep them for a while. |
