Post subject:  Correct Fluid level without dipstick

I had my transmission repaired a couple of months ago, it is a 904. But some jerk at the shop misplaced my dipstick and put in a Ford's. It has been impossible for me to find the right one for some time, no even at Ebay. How can I know the right level using in the meantime the Ford dipstick?. This is making me add a lot of fluid every now and then, and of course I am finding spills all over the garage... I know it may be because I overfilled the slump, but I panic thinking my transmission would crash if I do not add more to replace the lost fluid, which I think was lost because it was in excess... it is a viscious (and expensive) circle :(

Thank for the reply Dennis, yes I tried, but no one seems to care about dipsticks for 904's, I tried yunkyards, lost a couple of bids on Ebay because I did not check my PC on time... I think the solution in the meantime is to find someone with a 904 and borrow the stick for a quick check...
By the way, love your signature... it is wise

This is what I love about this board! There's more than money to be made in old cars. Making friends, exchanging tricks and helping others rank highly, too!

Spread the /6 love! :D

904 tranny dipstick measurements. Tranny in my 79 Plymouth Valiant..

Top to bottom:
Length from upper stop to tip 46.2 cms., or 18-3/16 inches
From upper stop to the full mark 41.6 cms., or 16-3/8 inches
From upper stop to the add 1 pint mark 43.2 cms., or 17 inches

From bottom up:
From the tip to the add 1 pint mark 3.0 cms., or 1-3/16 inches
From the add 1 pint mark to the full mark 1.6 (1.58 ) cms., or 5/8 inches.

Other:
Width of blade 7 mm., or 9/32 inches
Lenghth of handle 10 cms., or 3-15/16 inches.

Maybe you can "remark" your Ford dipstick to these readings...while you find the correct unit.

Buena suerte carnal

Re my post above:

While going to the garage to return the dipstick to the Valiant it occurred to me to compare it to the dipstick in the wagon 360 / 727......
Guess what? They are identical!...
Hmm, the wagon has been mine since day one and I'm positive it has the right dipstick, but I don't know about the Valiant, for I bought it used and this is the stick it came with.
So I don't know. Maybe some one else can clear this up.

Gracias Rafa... I will check if the 904 dipstick is similar to the 727's. If so, I will measure mine and make the check.

Saludos!!!
