I just got a slant six 1967 Barracuda. I put a 1974 225 and trans in it with a offy 4-barrel intake and ported exhaust manifold.
What is the best timing for a stock 225?
I would like at idle, total, and with vacuum advance

Some say around 10 at idle, 28-32 max, and 45 or so...
There is a lot of info on this if you do a search...

I say 15 initial 28 total mech around 20 vac (remembar that vac cans are stamped on cam degrees so around 20 vac qould be a 10R or 10X or 10 anything vac pod) Of course fabriction would be involved when it comes to the govnor. If you ain't prone to fabrication, get yourself a 9R govnor, then set the initial to 10 degrees and a higher vac pod.

My curve now has one light spring, one heavy loop end spring that makes those last 4 or 5 degrees kick in about 2500 rpm when my throttle configuration makes the vac pod go away, so is actually like a crossfade.

If you're runnin a 1920 or BBS you'll need to get one or two numbers larger main jet and enrichen the idle screw a bit (more advanced distribution brings alone higer vacuum and leaner mixture)

Timing curves are a balancing act and I am far from expert status, but here is my input.

My truck is heavier than a car, so I can't advance too much so quick as a car.
I haven't done extensive curving with my car yet, so disregard the picture, Think big heavy truck. Heavy is also relative to gear ratio, so, the same weight of car is 'lighter' with 3.55 gears than with 2.76 gears.

Hows that for splitting hairs? Can a gear change actually throw your timing curve off? We could ask Doc, I know he runs highway gears out to the track and then drops in short gears to race.

I have the 12 initial, 30 total distibutor curve (with 9r govnor). I have an 11 vac pod (22 degrees at crank)
I don't have an EGR valve. I believe that a working EGR would allow for greater amounts of vacuum advance at light throttle, but my current vac pod is too much when I start climbing a hill, it pings all to hell.

So, my added factors are weight of car/truck and with/without EGR and gear ratio. Based on the weight of your car and the lack of EGR, I think others have given you reasonable starting points.

I think a 6.5x (13 degrees at crank) vacuum pod is gp sorensen part #vcc525 an 11x (22 degrees at crank) is gp sorensen part #vcc535. I have not been able to find a 8.5x or 9x vacuum pod part number yet. (anybody?)

thanks for all the input. I don't have any problem welding up the slot and changing spring out. I have the elctronic dist. in it now. Is there a best year or part number to get at the auto parts store that is close to the right setup?
