Post subject:  Gear Vendors Under/Overdrive...

Does anybody now something about the Gear Vendors auxiliary transmissions?, I don´t know what kind of benefits my car can get if I install one of them in a 904. I've heard great stuff, but still in doubt... these things are expensive.

What about torque, economy, speed, temp and everything else that affects my Slant...?

Also, should I install one on my basic '74 904 or should I modify it or replace it with any other type of trans?

Thanks.

Ed

I think it is a good extra gear, but it is expensive, and I would not recomend it behind a slant, unless you go to a steep rearend gearing.
And you can pay for a lot of gas, for that money.
Do a search for the a-500 swap, that should be cheaper, and handle the slant just fine, but again I think you want at least 3.23 or more rear gearing, so it doesnt just bog down in O/D.
But that is just my opinion!

How hard is it to install an A500 transmission? A locking torque converter would be way cool.

You can find lockup 904´s too.
I think the swap was something like this:
Adapter plate between engine/trans
Modified tranny crossmember
Modified crossmember for the torsion bars(and floor?)
Shortened driveshaft
Some way of controlling lockup/overdrive

It doesnt look like a easy swap to me, but very doable anyway.

Do some searches... there is at least one car on this board with a 500.

You must be careful, because I am NOT the guru of these things!
So get more answers from others, before cutting your cars to pieces...
I guess that is the nice thing about these boards, if I say something wrong, someone will tell both of us how things really are.
But if I am almost sure of something I will post it, but with a disclaimer...
And really good luck with that blue thing, whatever it is :P
