Since the other topic was mainly flexplates I thought I'd start another.

Ok, so the shop took the stripped drain plug converter back, offerd to order me another one but I said no. None of the local auto stores even sell converters - napa, autozone, monument, kragen....

I recall Doc mentioning how he got his custom made from Continental, so I decided to call them up - they said they usually don't do street stuff, but if I send mine in they can freshen it up and do a basic build on it for $285.

So I'm kinda stuch here. Is there really no middle ground, either a $65 special or $~300 (I'd have to pay shipping) on up? I found MP converters are about $200 but I haven't heard too much about them. The lowest stall one is rated 1900-2100, which is equivalent to what 1300 on our slants? This transmission crud is driving me nuts... man I wished I knew how to drive a stick.

Give Andre a call, at Edge racing converters. I got a converter from him 2 years ago. Was very satisfied with the converter, price, and the customer service was great. They are in Calf.

From the research that I have done I would suggest that you ante up the $$ and get a converter that stalls where you want it. All of the quotes that I got start at $300 w/o shipping.

Charlie, talked to Andre today. He said your name rings a bell but he doesn't remember any specifics.

Told Andre what I'm doing. He recomended his mild street edge build with 2200-2400 stall. He said its only a slight increase in stall, but since the converter is going to be more efficient I would bearly feel it. He sounded pretty confident in the efficiency of his converter because he said I would get better mileage and he claims when he dynos them his converters give 14-18% increase in HP.

So for a total of $305 I get a $260 converter, $10 flexplate, a free teeshirt (woohoo! :P) bolts, tax because we're both in CA and shipping. Should be here monday. Was a real good guy to talk to, you were right about the customer service Charlie, thanks for the lead.

Charlie,

Was your Edge converter very hard to insert? I just got around to installing, well, attempting to install mine today. Something is off with it, either it was made for a smaller shaft or the spline count is off because I can't get it past the inner/outer shafts. Tried some gentle taping with a mallet to no avail either, thinking the splines were brand new and had an sharp edge to them or something.

Do not tap the converter on. A new converter can be a little bit of a pain to get on. Just need to finesse it. Just keep turning it and moving it in and out.

Man its being picky. The front of the ring gear is about 1/8" past the belhousing, and its not going any further past that. It needs to sink about another inch maybe. I think its still stuck on the splines somwhere, because when I turn it, for about half a revolution, I can hear and feel it go over the splines. Probably the inner shaft went through but the outer shaft is holding it up? Just guessing at this point.

Try pulling the TC back off the shaft and rotating the two inputs relative to each other? Is there trans fluid or some other lube on the inputs and at least a little inside the TC?

I tried turning the inner shaft half a splines worth because I thought the inner and outer splines weren't matched... but that didn't do it

I can't move the outer shaft easily by hand.

I poured a gulp or two from a quart of ATF into the converter and coated the shafts with my finger.

The freaky part is how easy the original $65 transmission shop special slides in. Either the new splines aren't worn yet and need some more persuasion, or something else is amiss.

727's don't use the same converter as a 904 do they? Maybe this one has 727 splines in it.

Do you have a late trans with 66-down spline on the TC?? The later trannys have a bigger input (both bigger?). You can probably count splines on the inside and compare w/inputs... I think the counts are different for the two different year-range trannys.

Lou,

It was my original 71 transmission rebuilt at a local shop, I suppose the shafts may of been changed, but not likely seeing as the other two transmission shop converters I went through were orderd for a 71.

I think the mystery has been solved. I counted the ounter shaft spline on both the old and new converter - 27. On the inner - old = 27, new = 26. I counted the new inner splines several times incase I made a mistake - 26 3 times.

Called Edge Racing back up - he says for a non lockup, inner/outer shaft spline count is 27/27. For lockup, inner/outer shaft is 26/27 spline respectively. He pulled up build sheet, and noticed one of the parts was specified for a lockup converter. So apparently the converter was built as a lockup instead. No big deal, hes sending a new one out.

Excellent. Glad that will get cleared up.

BTW, is Edge Racing in Inglewood? Could it be the same as Continental Converter, or are they different?
