Hey there you all on the board. I´m a new member and I have a (few) question(s) that I´m trying to figger out, but didn´t find though I´ve tried to search through old messages on the board.

I bought a -69 Valiant 4d (170cid) a while back because it has a 4 speed with the Inland floor shifter. Now I´ve located a -73 Valiant (225cid) with a 3 speed floor shifter.

The question is, can I swap them between just like that, or am I going to encounter problems?

Is there a floor hump with a 3 speed? The young guy that sells the -73 is in the army now and doesn´t know anything about the car.

The 1973 Chassis Service Manual that I have, states that "The A-250 transmission is used with 198 or 225 engines" but doesn´t say where the A-230 is used.
Which one is it (or does it even matter)?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

This is a relativily easy swap to do. The A833 will replace the 3 speed without any problems.

Pretty easy, just swap the bellhousing and the tranny, and possibly the driveline yoke and you're set.

Some 3spd cars came with Bell's that are 3spd only bolt pattern (my '74 had this with an A-230 tranny), this will give you a chance to look at the car's clutch too to make sure it's in good shape anyway. Mopar also was big on the "lets goof up the tech" and most of the 3spd trannies came with the same driveline yoke as the A-904 auto (small yoke) and some A-833's came with the big yoke (like the A-727), but there are a few out there that are "big yoke 3spds, and small yoke 4 spds" so...

You just need the bell, tranny(shifter and linkage), and driveline yoke from your donor car... (it's not a console car is it?)

happy motoring,

-D.Idiot

Thanks for the advice. So it´s a simple task then.
But what about the hump? Does the 3 speed have it also?
Because if it doesn´t, wouldn´t there be a problem, with not enough space, with the 4 speed linkage?
You have to understand that before I will buy the -73 I have to be shure, because here in Finland a Dart/Valiant in a rough condition with a /6 is worth about $1200, and I´m just an ordinary worker with limited funds.
And 'Duster Idiot', it doesn´t have a console. It´s a regular shifter, altough it´s an Inland instead of a Hurst.

If you have a floor mounted shift lever, you already have the "hump". They are the same between the 3 and 4 speeds.

The end of the cranks changed size, between 67 and 68.

The pilot bearing is the same size for all years.
