Post subject:  small bolt pattern to big bolt pattern??

hi all, I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 67 Dodge dart convertible. of course she has a slight 6. I just purchase a 74. dart swinger. off ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 4532349086
I worked out a deal. the reason I bought the car and was to upgrade my brakes to disk. I was wondering , does this car have the bigger bolt pattern.
if not is it hard to change it to the bigger bolt pattern? also the person who sold me the car told me that the rear end has 10 Bolts. is that a 8 1/4 rear end ? and will it fit into my car? thank you all for your time. it is anything else you'd think I should know please feel free to send a reply. after I take out all the Parts i need for my 67. i will sell it off. or appartt out on eBay or to whom ever might need to parts. thanks

I'm assuming the '74 has disc brakes (which would be why you bought it). If so, yes, the '74 has the big bolt pattern front and rear. The 10-bolt rear is the 8-1/4", yes, and will fit into your '67, but it probably has a taller ratio in it, if the '74 was originally an automatic car it would probably have 2.76 gears in the rear axle, while your '67, if automatic, would've had 2.93s. Check the rear axle ratio; you may need to swap speedo drive pinions. Note that you'll have to shorten your '67's driveshaft 'cause the 10-bolt rear is longer (protrudes farther forward) than the 9-bolt original. The '74's driveshaft would work if the '74 were a 111" wheelbase 4-door or Swinger, but it's not. It's a 108" wheelbase Sport, so the driveshaft will be way too short for use in your '67.

thank you, I have a few more questions. if my drive shaft is too long do I send it to A machine shop to shorten it? or by a new one? yes, the 74 has front disc brakes. 8 1/4 rear end will that give me better improvement in my car's performance? (faster takeoff & more power.) or do I have to change the gears? is it a sure grip? does not make a difference in takeoff?
if you have any ideas improving my performance just let me know. I would like to get as much power as I can for my slant 6 to make 6=8
THANK'S

Driveshaft work is carried out by a driveshaft shop. Check your yellow pages.

The 8-1/4" rear axle will not necessarily improve your car's takeoff performance—it all depends on what gear ratio your present rear axle has, and what gear ratio the new rear axle has. If the new one has a shorter ratio (higher number) than the old one, then your "getaway" will be faster. If the new one has a taller ratio (lower number), then your "getaway" will not be as quick. The rear axle ratio does not "give you more power" (or give you less power). The 8-1/4" rear axle was available with sure grip; yours may or may not have it and if it does, it may or may not be in working order.

The driveshaft from the '74 should be a boltin for the '67 when you use the 8.25" axle. You may have to change the front yoke to match the 4 speed.

The '67 Dart is a 111" wheelbase car. The '74 Dart Sport (Duster body) the OP bought for parts is a 108" wheelbase car. If both cars had 7¼" rear axles, the '74's driveshaft would be 3" too short for use in the '67. The '74 has an 8¼", which reduces but does not eliminate the length difference. If either the '67 or the '74 has the long slipyoke, the OP might get away with letting the spline sleeve hang farther out of the back of the trans to make up the rest of the length difference, but this isn't really the right way to do it. If the slipyoke sits more than one inch farther out of the trans, it's a very poor idea.

I do not know if this makes a difference, both cars are automatic. in this is a link to see what the car looks like. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 4532349086
on Saturday I will start working on the car swiping the rear end. hopefully all I have to do to the rear end. drop one replaced with the other one. easy I hope. if I have a problem with the ddrive shaftI'll let you know. after I get the rrear end finished. I'll change my old drums and put disc brakes on from the 74. after I finish that if anybody needs any parts ill be more than happy to sell them to. just let me know what you need. I live in Los Angeles CA.

Thanks for the correction, I didn't follow the ebay link.

3.21s are excellent. The rear end may or may not have a sure grip, and if it does, it may or may not work. To check, lift up the back of the '74 and turn one of the wheels. If the other wheel turns the opposite direction, it is NOT a sure grip (or it's a worn-out sure grip).
