Hi,
I'm currently considering 2 alternatives for upgrading to front disks on my 66 Barracuda. The 2 options I'm looking at are the kits offered by MP Brakes and Stainless Steel Brakes. Cost is not an issue, because the price for each is pretty close. My thoughts so far are:

MP Brakes pros:
All new parts, including spindles and upper control arms
Single caliper has more of a "retro" look
Parts available "in practically any parts store"

MP Brakes cons:
No matching rear brake kit if I want to upgrade later
Heavier

SS Brakes pros:
Don't need to swap spindles/upper control arms
Aluminum calipers are lighter; better handling
Matching rear brake kit available if I decide to upgrade later

SS Brakes cons:
Look too "modern" on a 66 (I don't care for the "G-machine" look)
Not sure about parts availabilty

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, as well as anyone's experiences with either of these companies. Thanks.

I guess my only comment on this would be why are you looking at what are far more expensice options than just trying to find a 73-76 factory disc brake upgrade? You can pick up a-body spindles, UCA, etc for $100 to 200 depending on what all you are looking for (they come up on here for that price pretty regularly). These would be BBP or you could of course try an even cheaper route with the f,m,j body spindles if you choose to believe the argument that the geometry change isnt detrimental (i have seen both sides argued equally well). With either of these sets all the necessary replacement parts are still available from any local auto parts store. I believe both require 15" or larger rims...dont know if the MP or SS work on 14" rims?

If you fear the braking ability of the later stock parts, I would say go with the SS parts so you can upgrade the rear brakes as well. I'm no expert, but I would think if your concerned that stock components dont have the braking ability to stop your vehicle you would be wiser to upgrade the rear with discs (or larger 10" drums) as well, but that is my opinion.

I am sure some of the other people on here with more experience stopping race cars can tell you more about what option would be best but unless your running on a track with a short slow down area I would think stock upgraded brakes would able to stop "most" slant six cars.

Based on your note, Ken, the MP kit sounds best for you if you want the simplest (but not cheapest) option. The spindles will likely not be new as I don't think they are producing spindles, most likely they'll be inspected and clean originals, which is fine. You are paying for a complete package.

If you want to go cheaper, use the advice above and get factory stuff.
