My 65 Valiant currently has a chrome valve cover on it, but its quality leave a lot to be desired. Pitting and keeping the flash rust at bay is a never ending problem. I see lots of them on ebag. Can one of you recommend a source of a good quality cover?

I don't know where to get a "good" one. The ones on ebay for $30 are crappy according to many that have used them (see: http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12121). I'm just going to paint mine chrome ;-) KIDDING!

You don't "get" a good quality chrome valve cover, you make one. Pick out an original valve cover in nice condition and send it in for chrome plating. It'll probably be more expensive than buying an Offenhauser aluminum cover.

Youre obviously picking form over function here, but keep in mind chrome engine accessories retain heat....

I seriously doubt you'd be able to find any significant difference in heat retension even if your oil pan, timing cover, valve cover, oil cap, PCV valve, air cleaner and radiator top tank were all chromed compared to painted.

Post subject:  chrome crap

I just had to sand and paint my Edlebrock air cleaner and breather cap because of constant rusting. Even after waxing them a few times still rust. And Edelebrock is supposed to be good stuff. Save yourself some grief. paint your slant and its accessories a cool color. Remember, you can't shine a turd.

Did you know that slant six water necks are aluminum? Water pumps too. Stamped steel shines up pretty nice, and cast iron may as well. Someday I want to try snad blasting and polishing all the stock pieces of a slant and then powder coating it with a clear coat and see how close to shiny chrome stuff it can look. As said above, chrome retains heat, and I don't like that. But a factory stamped valve cover sandblasted and polished would look just as good as a chrome piece and work better....

Yeah you can, if you rub it rigorously enough, but it still stinks!
