Post subject:  Spark plug replacement
My good friend SlantSixDan recommended to replace my current plugs with Champion RN13LYC because they are getting wet very often and making the engine to idle erratically. This to correct the problem and achieve better performance before I replace the rings and perform a major repair.

Unfortunately I could not find those plugs, but got Autolite 985. The guys at Pep Boys told me that it is an equivalent part and that will work just as well...

I already bought them, but need to know if it is correct. If not, I am selling a set cheap!!! :P

985 should have the same extra-extra long electrodes as RN13LYC. I would've suggested 985s but I didn't realize you can get Autolites. The only real difference is that the Autolites have a 5/8" hex instead of 13/16".

Do you have a digital camera to show us the electrodes on the 985s?

Ordinary gap. I run 0.035" with points, 0.040" with Chrysler electronic, 0.045" with GM HEI conversion.

Hey... those are the same plugs I run in my Slant. I tried getting 925s with just the extended electrode but they said the p/n is superceded... havent noticed a difference anyway...

I just intalled the plugs... started the engine and it ran erratically... :( , perhaps it is because it was cold. Had to turn it off because I was busy, but will take a ride in a while to notice any difference. I'll keep you posted of the results.

The double-extended electrodes move the spark point out towards the center of the combustion chamber and away from the metal edges. The plugs were originally designed for tough-to-light engines (desmogged AMC 232/258, Chrysler TBI 318s in '81-'83 Imperials), 'cause the mixture is much less variable in the middle of the chamber than at the edges, and these long-electrode plugs give more consistent light-off of the cylinder under borderline-combustibility conditions. A similar electrode set is used in some of the recent-model Chrysler 3.5 litre engines.

I use 'em in my '89 Ram TBI 318, my 2.2/2.5 cars, my slant-6s...

So there must be adequate clearance from the plug tip to the valves and piston?
