Finally figured out the valve lash. Got them all set. Sprayed a little carb cleaner through. Adjusted the carb. Before I did all this, I could pull the #5 plug wire and nothing changed (while running). Now when I pull it, it almost shuts off, almost what you would expect. This thing runs so smooth, Im almost afraid to mess with it anymore. Almost. I have the carb rebuild kit and two carb mounting gaskets coming in on Thursday. What do you guys think about oil system flush? Most people have told me not to do it 'cause 'gunk' might be holding it together. But it is really dirty under the valve cover and Im not quite ready to pull the head and clean it up yet. The stuff I was looking at is Gold Eagle complete oil system flush. It states it will "Safely clean out sludge & deposits from oil system". Directions are: Add through oil fill opening, idle to circulate for 3 minutes, then perform complete oil change. |

Your engine is not a toilet, therefore do not flush it. More "why not?" details if you want them. |

Ill take your word for it. Instead of "why not", how about "how else" can I effectively and safely 'clean' the motor internals? Or is the 'obvious' the only way? Is the top of the head a good indication of what the rest of my motor looks like ? Or should I not worry so much about it? Thanks for any advice. [edit for] PS My motor has 135,000 miles and I have no idea how its been treated. |

Unless you have a specific problem, there's no need to worry about it. If the rocker assembly is so crudded up that it's not oiling properly, remove it, string all the rockers and spacers on a loop of coat hanger wire, pry the endcap plugs out of the rocker arm and have the works hot-tanked. There are ways to clean out an engine, but the "fast flush" type engine enemas are bad news—you stand a better chance of causing expensive problems than of fixing anything. I put up a detailed post on the subject some time back; it is Here. |
