Post subject: | Wheel Bearing Installation ? |
Just curious as to how everyone "seats" wheel bearings after they have been cleaned and repacked. I had a discussion with a friend of mine and we both have different ways of installing. I believe I'm right-my friend thinks he is right-so we will let the board members decide who is right and wrong. BTW-my friend has experienced numerous wheel bearing failure. I haven't. This concerns the standard front wheel bearing found on a Dart, Valiant, etc. with drum or disc brakes. Thanks Todd |

I always hand tighten the nut until it stops turning, then back it off 20* or so, then install the cotter pin. You just want it a bit loose so the bearing has room to expand. |

Per 66 Plymouth factory service manual. (1) Tighten wheel bearing adjusting nut to 90 inch lbs, while rotating wheel. (2) Position nut lock on nut with one pair of slots in line with cotter pin hole. (3) Back off adjusting and nut lock assembly one slot and install cotter pin. The resulting adjustment should be zero (no preload) to .003 inch end play. |
