OK I got the car on ramps and I am under there and there is this little unit the swivels and keeps the oil light wire attatched It seems to not unscrew. Immedicately after that is a very large part that it attatches to which does seem to unscrew, but it's much larger than any of the fittings that came with my oil gauge. So is this where I could connect and is it normal to need another fitting or am I going at this wrong. PS I have to have this done today!

Never done it myself, but I believe you are on the correct path. I believe you can use regular plumbing fittings, a nipple, a T and a reducer, if you want to keep both the light and the gauge working, or just a reducer with the gauge. Take the switch and the gauge fittings along with you to the store so you are sure to get the right ones, and get some teflon tape or something to keep things form leaking.

The other method involves tapping a new hole at a special location on the block. I doubt that's what you had in mind, and I don't have details anyway.

From hardware store, procure 3/8" NPT (pipe thread) to 1/8" NPT reducer and 1/8" NPT tee. Proceed to Idiot Auto Parts store of your choosing and procure one standard 1/8" NPT oil pressure sending unit for the light (about 5 bucks, and your old one was probably about to go bad anyway - just tell 'em your car's got a 318 to ensure you get the 1/8" one, don't try to explain to them). While at Idiot Auto, procure copper tubing kit for oil gauge. Install reducer followed by tee, install sending unit for light on top/side of tee, install copper tube using ferule and nut on straight portion of tee. Make sure you bend a loop somewhere in the tubing between the engine and firewall. Find a conveniently placed plastic insulation nail on firewall that sticks through into engine compartment (black pointy plastic thing). Whack tip off with razor blade or knife, wa-la, instant hole and protective grommet for tube. Throw plastic tube that came with gauge in trash.
