Post subject:  Wiring gurus: 71 Dart question

Is there two different wiring diagrams out there? I have a 71 diagram but doesnt match my car. The Dart has the key buzzer and 4 prong horn relay, and a bunch of other differences. I am having an awful time getting things back together, and if theres a revision or change out there, I'd appreciate some insight.

Thanks in advance

What diagrams do you have?

All '71s had the key-in-ignition buzzer. '71s first sold in New York and parts of some other states had a legally mandatory two-level horn: One horn below 30mph or so, and both horns for higher speeds.

Where'd you get the diagram you're working from now?

I have a scan of a 71 Dart FSM. I have at least 1 circuit going through the BH connector that is a dead end. Lots of ither stuff that just dont match.

This thing has been a very large headache. I found a completely fried wire and pulled the dash harness to trace and fix whatever fried it. Thats a whole nuther story there, then as I started putting things back together, thats when the trouble started. Several connectors dont do what the diagram says they should.

Hence my question about a revision or maybe a midyear change or something

Interesting about the 2 level horn. How on earth did they make it "know" vehicle speed??

I think they hooked it up to the speedometer someway, sorta like what they did with the EGR reminder light.

By the way, how do you get this damn light to go off ? The one on my car has been on since 1990.

Sounds to me as if your wiring issues may be due to previous hacks/repairs/mods more than due to a production difference.

I'm not entirely sure how they sensed speed for the town/highway horn, 'cause I've never worked on a car so equipped, but I think it was by means of a speed sensor box in series with the rotating speedo cable, as was done for pre-electronic cruise controls.

For another data source, you can download the reasonably well-done Mitchell diagram for your Dart here:

-DS (could swear I've said this before...recently...it's almost as though my post blew away in the wind, or got washed down the drain...or maybe got deleted or something...)

Which car? The simplest way to turn off the EGR reminder light is with a small piece of black electrical tape. The cleanest, nexts-simplest and most permanent way to turn off the EGR reminder light is to remove the bulb... ;-)
