| Post subject: | One Week 'til the Big Bend Road Race |
I'm signed up to work the Big Bend Open Road Race next weekend at Fort Stockton, Texas. http://www.bborr.com/ I doubt there'll be any slants running this year, but you never know. There were a couple of Studebakers (Hawks and a Commander) and Corvairs in previous years, so anything could happen! Whether you call it a long-range goal or a fantasy, I'd love to set up my Valiant to run it, in one of the Street Rod classes where you try to average a certain speed. This is my first real step in that direction, besides reading and thinking. I'll be watching, asking questions, and taking notes. If I get some good pictures, I'll post them. |

I just spent a while reading the rules and stuff posted on the website. Looks like a lot of fun. I'm building my car for street to strip, so high speed road racing is not really in the picture. I guess with a gearing change just about anything is possible. It's gonna be a while till I get a full roll cage and all that, but we can all dream. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun and lots to learn. I'd love to see pics or some of the -unlimited- class cars.

They have different safety equipment requirements, depending on the class. You have to be in the GT Class before you have to have a roll cage, but it wouldn't hurt to have one. Everyone has to have an approved helmet, fire extinguisher, speed-rated tires, and seatbelts, then it builds from there. Gearing would be very important. Finally, a use for those 2.low ratio differentials out there! I have a 2.94:1 7 1/4" in mine, which would be a fair compromise. I think a well-thought-out, warmed-up, daily-driver Valiant would be a fine car in the Street Rod and Touring classes. And one like Lou's ... wow! |

I did a delivery to Parker Az last fall and happened upon the highway where they do the Silver State Classic. Five miles at over 110 mph in our Roadmaster wagon was enough for me. There is a lot of paying attention involved. Hitting a robin at 150 mph must be rather dramatic.....  But officer.....I can explain eh...we are CANADIAN eh! |
