shamhC, Have you read some of the articles posted on the main page? There are some really good articles there that pretty much spell out what modifications help out the Slant 6. You've already got a bigger carb and exhaust, so you're well on the way already. Another thing that is often recommended is higher ratio gears in the rear differential. Many of the A bodies came with 2.76:1 gears and would benefit from something more like 3.23:1. Your gas mileage will suffer some though. Check out the articles and use the search option to look for some specific topics you're interested in. You'll notice that performance improvement topics are covered again and again in most of the sections. Once you have a good idea about what you really want the car to do for you, let us know and we can help you a little better. Those early Darts are some very nice looking cars. I have several '64-5 Valiants. I just love the body lines. How long have you had your Dart? |

What's next: * 1964 Dodge/Dart factory service manual -- get it on eBay or from www.autolit.com for instance * Stockel and Stockel, "Auto Mechanics Fundamentals", an issue before approx 1980, see Here * Petersen's Automotive Troubleshooting & Repair Manual, 1975. See Here These three books (modify factory service manual year/make to suit your car) are very, very highly recommended for anyone just starting out working on a slant-6 car. The Stockel book explains how everything works. The Petersen book has LOTS of pictures and explains how to fix everything. The factory service manual contains all the data and settings for your particular car. Buy. Read. Assimilate. |

Hey Shamc jokes aside, I 'm offering you again that I'll send you a gas cap for free if you provide me the actual measures of what you need. On the other hand, owning a vintage classic car ain't about "upgrade-upgrade-upgrade". Most of the stuff you've added ain't following any pattern, you'll end up throwing your money away, I'm telling you 'cuz I had my share of that when I was an excited dart underaged driver. Most of the time is about taking care of your jewel, trying to avoid dangerous situations as parking in front of a keg party, change your fluids frequently, service all the parts to avoid abnormal wear, collecting parts even if you don't need them now. I dunno if we're gonna be able to find some things in a couple of years. I bought 2 sets of upper and lower control arms for my dodge last months. Turns out that those ws the last 2 sets in the entire country! I know you ain't in argentina, bu same must have happend with gas caps, don't you think? I'll say, every time you're behind the wheel, you have to focus over the fact that you're driving a piece of history that can end up trashed if you don't take smart decisions. Dan's suggestions are great, nothing beats the fact of actually understanding what's going on inside your car when you drive. You'll never gonna end up battering your knuckles aginst motor parts you ain't familiar with if you are on the side of a lonely road. If you start a studying trip to better understand and be able to fix your car, you'll enjoy 500% more and you'll have that nice feel of pride everytime you ride your ride. |
