Ok, I'm normally a Chevy guy but I have been helping my friends son out. he has a 66 Valiant that I replaced the motor in due to bearing failure on his motor. None of the linkage was moved on the transmission but I can not get the car to start with the key. I thought by jumping the large red and black wires from the ignition I could "hot wire" it. No luck. I do have power to the switch, and I can start the car with a remote starter. I'm a little more than stumped. I don't think the neutral starter switch or ignition switch would have failed during the engine swap. i'm replacing some of his brittle wiring to help with conductivity and reduce resistance but don't know where to go next. Any ideas? Thanks much |

Check the starter relay on the firewall, and the connections through the firewall bulkhead connector. I'll bet a wire got knocked off the starter relay, though. |

When you say, it won't start, do you mean, it carnks but doesn't start, or won't even crank? |

I recall having a similar trouble after a swap some time ago. Turned out to be the neutral safety switch harness. If I held that with my hand the car would crank ans start, but after 10 min of rolling the vibrations did their work and that connector loosened. |

OK, I'll check those connectors. I mean it will not crank at all with the switch. |

Find the started relay, on the firewall. Jumper the terminal on the relay, that goes to the neutral safety switch, to ground. If it now cranks, adjust the shift linkage, and if it still does not crank, check the wire to the neutral safety switch, and/or replace the switch. I think you will find the linkage got knocked out of adjustment. |

THanks for all your input, turned out to be a broken wire, they are extremely heat brittle. Anyone make a replacement engine wire set for the 66 Valiants? |
