Post subject:  Slant ticking when accelerating
Hi everyone! I have -80 Aspen with 225 (2-bbl). Automatic, no catalytic converter. It has always been quiet, but now it has (slant) been makin ticking noice when accelerating :( . Noise disappears when I drive evenly. I think the noise could appear after I drove few times a long way (over 100 miles) continuously about 80 miles/hour. It is about 20k miles ago when I set the valve lashes. Is possible that some valve has burnt? Anyway, I think it is time to set the valve lashes? :?

Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak around the manifold or where the head pipe bolts to the manifold. Another good place for a leak is where the intake and exhaust manifolds are bolted together.

Mine has an exhaust leak and thats exactly how it sounds, makes ticking sound during acceleration, then quiets down at speed, or when decellerating.

Possibly, but what you're describing sounds more like a small exhaust leak at the head-to-manifold(s) gasket.

A tick that depends on load (how hard you're mashing the gas) is an exhaust leak. A valve or lifter tick will make the same noise whether you're accelerating or coasting.

Head-to-manifold exhaust leaks often close up and stop ticking when the manifolds get hot, so that could explain what you heard also.

Thanks for advices! First thing to do when I get some spare time is to check the manifolds for any leaks. I couldn't expect the manifolds at all, cause I thought it would make a burring (don't know if the word is right) noise. But that is worth to check.

...usually an exhaust "tick" is due to a tiny leak up near the port at the head where the heat and pressure is very high. A "brrwwwww" or cackling sound is usually further downstream, for instance where the manifolds are bolted together or at the headpipe flange.

Believe it or not, sometimes I hear a ticking that sounds like a lifter coming from my smog pump. After I've been running for about 5 minutes the the pump gets quiet. I don't have a clue as to what's the cause. But it definitely came from the pump. The ticking comes and goes randomly. I have not been able to find a specific set of circumstances that makes the noise appear.

Ghosts in the machine I guess.

What is smog pump? (my english isn't very good)

I set the valve lashes and cil 5&6 exhaust valves had very little lashes. I couldn't get 0,5 millimeter (0.020 inch) feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve. It's bossible that lashes are now little too big (rattles a bit) but I think it don't harm anything :?: The noise didn't disappeare, and manifold had no cracks, so I think it's the manifold gasket that leaks.

I don't think you have a smog pump, since yours is an export model. The smog pump is a emissions control device used on US cars. It is a round, belt driven pump that shoots air into the exhaust stream, lowering emissions.

Now I figured out what the smog pump is. Have seen its picture in chilton's book. I don't have it. (And all other emission control systems I have made out of operation, cause they made air leaks due to they were broken). Idle quality improved a lot after that. :D
