Hi! Has anyone changed instument cluster light bulbs to Aspen (mine is model -80)? I removed the instrument cluster bezel and steering column cover and yet I couldn't reach the speedometer cable to disconnect it. Chiltons book just says to reach up behind the cluster and disconnect the cable by pressing the retaining clip downward. I found it impossible since there is no room for hand behind the cluster. The cluster comes out only about one inch without disconnecting the cable. Or maybe to disconnect the cable from the other end and then give some loose to change the bulbs? Jukka |

I just dealt with this a few weeks ago on a 78 aspen and an 80 aspen. While trying to remove the electrical connections from the back of the cluster for the 78 I cracked the electrial board. Be patient and gentle! For the speedo cable, here is my method. Stand on your head in the front seat with your head and arm up under the dash. Find the speedo cable where it enters through the firewall. Follow the cable with your hand up to behind the cluster to squeeze the retaining lock. It is a very tight fit. You will have scratches on your hand and arm by the time you are done, but it works. It might also be possible to disconnect the speedo from the transmission to allow some slack to pull the cluster out a little farther. |
