Post subject:  Ghost shifting?

How's everyone doing? Here's my question: I just finished the new instrument cluster for my 72' duster. I started her up with no problem, but i noticed that when i put it in reverse and turned the wheel a bit to back out, the transmission shifted back into park by itself. It did it when i was in drive too. Any ideas on would cause this? I was able to drive the two miles back to the garage without it happening again, but it would suck if that happened on the highway!
Thanks :D

try to rotate your steering column assy. Maybe your shifting linkage is outta alignment.

Post subject:  should have called it drunken shifting

I was pretty well lit when i took out and re-wired the instrument cluster. I thought i tightened down the column bolts with the socket wrench, but realized i only made them hand tight..
the next time i work on the car while drinking, i'm going to double check the work sober and before i drive it.
That's the 2nd time i did something stupid.. last time i forgot to put the lock washer on the pitman arm before putting the nut on.. i still have to get to my friends shop so he can impact the nut off and back on with the washer in place..
Thanks for the help..

Consider yourself lucky, you put the nut on. At least the pitman arm didn't fall off, while you were going down the road.

Your right about that charlie, but I was only going about 15 or so mph anyway, left plenty of room in front of me, and was ready to pull the e-brake if something stupid happened.
I removed and rebuilt the entire front end when i switched to disk brakes and i definitely need an alignment now. Sounds like i'm on a turn going 90, when i'm going straight at 15. i wish i could have taken pictures of the people watching.
Looking at the front of the car both wheels are the same distance out from the body. This is my first time working on any car so i wont even attempt the string method that my friend suggested.
Next weekend i'm going to change the leaf springs and swap out the 7 1/4 to an 8 /4. I forgot who it was here that asked about shock plates, but i got mine from tonys parts in delaware.
Take care,
Jay
