Post subject:  Electronic Ignition
It looks like I have to re-do my points yet again and I'm sick of it. I'm a neophyte when it comes to this sort of thing, but I am seriously thinking of switching to an electronic ignition system. I've seen the type that use the existing distributor body and wonder if they're any good. I don't have a huge amount of money to throw at the problem, but I sure am sick of changing points. What is the best, most economical way to switch to electronic ignition?

You can get a distributer and ECU from a parts store, and the wire harness from the dealer. Or you can get it all cheaper from a wrecking yard. Either way you want to go, here are wiring diagrams to help you out.

This information is geared to removing the new computer systems, but applys to upgrading from points as well. It actually a bit easier to upgrade from points due to less wiring hassles.

I've done this swap. If you can find a decent distributor on ebay, you can then buy the rest of the parts for about $50 new.

If you can find an old aspen or volare with a slant six, you can rob the entire setup from the junkyard, often for a song.

This is reliable and easy to get parts for. It's also easy to understand for any mechanic who has worked on a few old mopars.

I see it as a good alternative, but 'BEST' is subject to lots of opinion.

'Cheapest' is to get some good quality points and keep them in adjustment.

the HEI conversion is inexpensive, easy, better than using the Mopar module, allows bigger spark plug gaps, and eliminates the ballast resistor.

I spent less on my HEI conversion than the cost of a Pertronix module, using junkyard parts and wire I already had.

I'm not against the HEI conversion. If you are doing all the work yourself and confident with what you are doing, then it's a very good option. (based on the feedback I've seen from other members of this site)

Eliminating the balast resistor makes the wiring simpler, and there are plenty of places to get info, so it's beginning to look like a 'best bet' conversion option. I think most of the parts cost the same or less as well.

Only reason is to stay "all mopar", but all the parts are made in china anyways. :roll:

Does anyone have a part# for an HEI module? The scrap yards in my area seem to be a bit light on Mopars of this vintage.

I picked up a distibutor from the junk yard from a /6 truck for $10, the factory wiring harness from the dealer is $20, and the electronic ignition module is $17 from AutoZone. Grand total of $47 and about 1 hour of your time. I've heard good things about Pertronix but the choice is up to you.

There is nothing wrong with any of the options mentioned here. I run (retrofit) standard Chrysler electronic on a lot of my cars, as mentioned, you can score the stuff at the junkyard for cheep if you are lucky. Pertronix cost about 70 bucks including ship, and it takes about 10 minutes to install.
