I finally located a super six intake and brand spanking new Carter BBD for my '62 Valiant... and from reading the posts here, it looks like I've still got to get a post-'73 exhaust manifold and a super six air cleaner before I install anything.

There is supposed to be a problem with the choke slot?... I set the Super six intake on my exhaust manifold and it *seems* like it would fit. What is the difference between the pre and post '73 exhaust manifolds? I'm wondering if my '62 might have had the exhaust replaced at some point.

And on the air cleaner assembly... will any air cleaners from other mopars (say a v8 with 2 barrel) work or is it JUST the super six air cleaner? I ask since super sixes aren't that plentiful in the yards here in California...

The '73-up exhaust manifold has the correct type of choke "pocket" casting on #5 exhaust runner to accept the Super Six transverse-push choke thermostat, while the earlier types don't. Other than that all the exhausts are interchangeable and flow identically. Your easiest workaround might be to pick up the electric choke conversion kit. I bought one of these for my '62 and while I didn't have time to install it when I was at the car's location last week (only 2 days of car-working weather), I did examine it and set it all in place, and it'll happily mount to whatever exhaust manifold you want to use, with the probable exception of the '70-'72 manifolds with their oddball "open hole and stainless cup" choke stove.

You do need a 2bbl air cleaner, and fit is kind of critical not so much in the horizontal direction (unless you have A/C as I do, in which case horizontal fit is a BIG problem) but in the vertical direction. There's just not much hood-to-carb clearance when you run a 2bbl on a 225 in a '62. The Super Six air cleaner sits rather flat and is known to fit on a 225 in a '62. V8 air cleaners will work if they will fit. Make SURE you don't have contact between the air cleaner and the underside of the hood, even when you rev the engine and it torques on its mounts. I didn't, and as a result the gobs of sealer have all been vibrated off the inner/outer panel junctions in my '62. I still haven't worked out a satisfactory air cleaner solution, but I'm not giving it too much thought 'cause soon I'll have bigger problems (how to make a twin-SU intake clear the A/C).

With a little cutting and grinding you can make the choke pocket work on the early manifolds.
