What will I gain by blocking off the ERG with a ERG block off plate? I saw the part on ebay for 12.50. I know my truck still has the ERG on it and I was wondering if this would be a good change? |

If your egr is leaking or stuck in the open position, it can cause performance problems. Without spending a dime, you can rotate the existing egr 180 degrees to block off it's operation. Removing a properly functioning EGR will not be of benifit. EGR is designed to prevent engine knock due to low octane, and will allow less fuel to be burned during light engine load. (all in theory of course) At wide open throttle, the EGR should close and allow for full power. Save your money for something else. That's my 2 cents. |

If you decide to remove it later, do like I did and make a block-off out of a thin piece of plate aluminum, using the base of the EGR as a template. Jerry |

Ram's right...as long as the EGR system is well designed and working properly. The problem with most of these '70s EGR systems is that they were a desperation "get it past the Federal emission certification test" measure. They're very primitive and even when working as designed, tend to overdo it on admission of exhaust gas into the intake tract, which really can negatively affect driveability and part-throttle performance. Modern computerised modulated EGR systems can indeed improve driveability, but they're a far cry from what's on any Slant-6 with EGR. |
