Post subject:  Another Ignition option.

I guess Im gonna throw some more fuel on the fire(or vice versa) of the best ignition upgrade debate, but here goes.
Im currently rebuilding a 63 Dart 170 for my wife and the the original point ignition worked great and was in good condition(I made sure it was in correct working order for comparasons sake) but I wanted to change to more modern ignition to try for a little more mpg and mainly because I wanted to.
I have used the factory Chrysler E.I. on many of my past carsand think it is is great setup and the GM H.E.I. worked well for many members but I have also used MSD products for years and have two 6a boxes currently installed on non-stock slants and they are bullet proof in my humble opinion,so as I was browsing the MSD catalog,I came across the Blaster ign.box and decided to try it. Unlike the 6a it does not have multiple sparks but rather a stronger, longer duration spark and is not meant for cars that will see alot of modifacations but more for stock engine like the one in my wifes Dart(the only other mod is 2 inch exaust at present and possibly a future upgrade to a 5200 Holley/Weber carb).
The installation was straight forward and simple(two wires less than a 6a box) and will trigger from a point or E.I. dist.
The price was $112 through my local Advance Auto store and I already had an e.i. dist from a freebie 77 Aspen .
Once installed ,the car fired up immediatly even though it was close to 10 degrees retarded, after setting the timing to 10 btdc I took for a spin and it ran well so I bumped it to 12* and it wasnt as good so I dropped it to 7.5* and the engine really responded to that setting,I still need to dial in the vacumm advance but low end grunt and ease of starting imprved noticably. The only issue I had during the tuning was that the new coil got extremely hot and started breaking down(I still have ballast resistor installed and the coil was speced for a 76 Dart and mounted on the inner fender) so I installed a old Accel Super Stock coil I had laying around and all was good again, probably just a bad coil .
Im not saying that this is better option but just another one and one that seems to work well and is more food for thought.

Hey Hyper Vliant... sounds like a great path. I got my relabeled mopar performance MSD6AL on ebay @ 120 bux... so I didn't care for checking the blaster ignition, but sounds like a nice alternative.
keep us posted on how it works.

It is nice setup but it does not accept all of the add on goodies that the 6a or 6al will ,it is basically just an upgrade from points but does work well and is a viable alternative for folks wanting to lose their point ignition.
After reading your posts ,I dont think you would have liked the Blaster and I wouldnt even consider using it on my Hyper-Pak Valiant as Im planning on the timing control module for a future upgrade but for my wifes Dart it is perfect.

yeah, great path for "the wife's" dart. Not for restless add-on geeks like me. My father had one of those (early unit, like more than 10 years ago) and it worket perfectly, even the guy who purchased his car is been using that stuff. is about 20+ YO and during tha ttime it has given perfect troublefree service.

Yeah,I like the add-ons too and most of my stuff has plenty of them but the Dart needs to stay simple for my own sanity.
