A note to the moderators before I start... if this thread is in an inapproriate section please advise.

After many frustrating hours of trying to match a decent metric forged piston to our humble Slant 6 engine, I have had enough. I run restorations and parts vendorship in Sydney Australia (http://www.pentastarparts.com.au) that specialises in catering for the Chrysler enthusiast, I have just closed a deal on manufacturing Slant 6 specific forged piston sets. These sets will be available in flat-top form for standard/high compression engines and a dished low compression version for boosted applications. This is great news for our engines and hobby as a whole.

Although a final cost is not yet finalised I have expectations of no more than $1100 AUD per set. complete with premium Moly ringset. I am not currently taking pre-orders but I do require an expression of interest to better educate myself on initial numbers required. put it in parts for sale? that seems more appropriate even though you're a vendor I don't think that matters much

Actually in my opinion it belongs here. This post is more to do with determining the interest in developing the product. I think more people who might be interested will see it here. When and if they are for sale then that post should go to "parts for sale". Although an announcement that they were available might still be appropriate here.

FWIW, JE and Venolia both make custom forged pistons (any comp height, bore...) for the Slant for about $100 US per hole. Cox Bros sell sets, and probably have some on the shelf. Who will make yours, Ray?

I am collecting the parts to do a long rod turbo motor. If you had pistons for this application, similar to the 2.2 pistons, with the correct deck height to get whatever quench we can out of the head, I am interested. I agree with Lou, the price has to be competative with the piston shops here.

Indeed they do, I was there on Thursday working on my cylinder head (they're around the corner from my house) and Jim showed me the pistons and the uber-expensive crmo rods they have in stock.

The pistons I mention will be locally produced (Oz), like I said at this stage final costing have not been completed, and realistically it may come down to a pre-determined order to get the right price. I was aware that Venolia and JE offer these services, although it seems that I may have been misguided by previous quotes. I seem to remember them being around $150 USD per slug. I will investigate this further.

Does anyone have any more details on the rods offered by Cox ? .... costs ? .... based on what rod ? etc.... even contact details I cannot seem to find anything on the internet (how about that ?).... do they have a website ?

An alloy head may even be a very real possibility .... now I have your attention, right ? :shock: ... more on that one later.

Hi Ray,

Getting a modern, closed quench chambered, good breathing head would be the cat's meow.

Let us know what your plans are... I think Doc has the plans for one sketched up. If you work with him, I suspect it wouldn't be much harder than finding a casting company that would engineer his diagrams into a mold, and then final machining.

It is later now...

I don´t really care if it is aluminum, or cast iron, as long as it has "modern" chambers, And better flow...
And they have to stay as reliable as the stock head.

Quit messing with my (old) head!

Ray, I've got some thoughts on an alloy head and some questions on pistons.

Pistons:
  • Cam-ground or fully round?
  • Ring grooves how far down from deck? (less distance here = better running, but calls for good quality alloy and good quality rings)
  • Offset or dead-centre pin bore?
Head:
  • You thinking of making a head that would be adaptible to multiple purposes, or would this be a full-boogie, race-only type piece?
  • Combustion chambers: An update of the "stone age" SL6 chamber would be a terrific thing. How involved are you planning on getting with chamber design? Time was, it was strictly a "cut and try" type deal, but now with computerised simulations and suchlike, a huge amount of improvement could be had...at the cost of a lot of time and effort, of course.
  • Fuel injector bosses to put the injectors right in the ports?
  • Compatibility with both iron and alloy blocks? This would be very easy to provide for; basically just have to make sure there's clearance for the slightly different angle the pushrods assume in the alloy block. The "Gotchya!" factor on this might be that you can't go any bigger than a certain O.D. on the combustion chambers and still seal to the freestanding bore sleeves in the alloy block, while some people might want to run super-huge bores on the iron block. I don't know enough about head design to be certain that these two goals are in competition with each other, but it seems to me they might be.
I've often thought that it'd be terrific to have a Slant-6 head that basically copied the combustion chamber and ports of the late-model 4.0-litre Jeep Six. Exhaust ports are round and it uses a nicely designed, very affordable factory tubular exhaust manifold. Intakes are likewise carefully designed, and the combustion chambers have been steadily improved over the last 15 years or so to the point where this is a highly efficient engine—certainly the most recently-uprated non-crossflow inline-six engines available in North America. I know Ford produces some amazing inline Sixes in OZ, not sure if they're crossflow or not. I also don't know if it'd be possible to design a head that would take the nice Jeep tubular exhaust manifold and still accept the many available Slant-6 intake manifolds...
