hey, have anyone used this alt setup with power steering? brackets are avalible?

That is a VERY scarce setup you're asking for. It was used only on 1960 Valiants with power steering. The P/S pump mounts down on the driver's side of the block (where the alternator is mounted on non-P/S cars) and the alternator is mounted to a special variant of the water neck/thermostat housing. The toughest piece to find is the special water neck, P/N 2121908.

Ummmmmmm...h'm. My '60 Valiant service and parts manuals are in storage in Denver (about 2400 km and an international border from here...) There's a decent illustration in the '60 Valiant new-car brochure, but I think all my copies of that are also in Denver...

This came from an on-line experience in the past-(2003) the guy had this left in his 61 lancer. I will have to ponder his name if you are intereted in the parts. Anyhow the 60 valiant service manual had 0 pics of the desired set-up, the pic they have on a car is of the pressure test it's on a v-8 car(go figure). I've had 2- 60 valiants with the left side mounted alternator bracket, both 170 cars neither had the head drilled/tapped for the later style alternator bracket. Hopefully these pics help.

VDart, that's the non-A/C '60-'66 slant-6 power steering bracket and pump (w/Thompson roller type pump). Those parts are a lot more common than the pieces necessary to mount the alternator above 'em!

Some food for thought. I was at the wrecking yard today and saw an '86 van with a slant. It had an air pump mounted above the power steering pump. Got me thinking about this post, like maybe this bracket could somehow be used or modified to accept an alternator, either one of the square back style or a newer Nippondenso unit.

Eric's idea is worth pursuing. If I were to try it, I'd definitely go with the smaller, lighter, easier-to-mount Nippondenso unit.

Sorry Dan, that's all I had for early style A body p/s, actually never seen one with p/s except for that picture. By the way do those early style motor mounts ever wear out? I didn't measure, but it looks very possible to use them in place of the biscuit style 62-66 with very minor mods!! Also the diameter of the steering shaft on the 60-61 cars is smaller than the 62-66 style - do not know about the p/s set-up diameter.

The steering boxes don't interchange between '60-'61 and '62-up cars (different mounting). The '60-'61 vertical-shear engine mounts do seem to hold up very well over the years. They are difficult to find! I've thought about swapping these into my '62, and I have a set of them. It looks like the RH mount might be a direct swap, but the LH mount's "foot" bolt hole (to the K-frame) hits air, so a tab would have to be welded onto the K-frame, as it seems to me. If you figure out another way to do it, let us know!

I did not find any pictures in the FSM for 60 of the
driver side alternator set up. I did find the artists
version from a sales brochure.

Does that mean flex hose was used on production 60
Valiants for the upper hose?

Yep, that's the pic I was thinking of in the brochure. Don't think the flex hose was factory—the alternator also isn't quite right in detail, the manifold's a little off, etc. This is an artist's conception of the engine as installed in ????.

I think I'm gonna tig a chopped RH bracket (the one that bolts to the head) to a waterneck and see what happens. Keep you guys posted.
