hi, I was wondering what size of a battery is preferable for my slant. Like what cranking amps amount is good?

Where do you live? Those in Sunnyvale (where it drops all the way down to 60 degrees in "winter" and shoots clear up to 78 degrees in "summer") don't need much battery. Those in Calgary (-40 in winter) and those in Phoenix (well over 100 in summer) have specific battery needs to cope with those conditions. Also, very high compression engines need more battery (and more battery cable) than stockers.

I've had good results over the years with the Optima batteries. They're more expensive, but less problem-prone and longer-lived.

I have had no battery related problems since I started to buy them with at least 650cca
Just a rule I have

I tend to get the cheapest group 24 battery (or closest to group 24 in size) I can. Same battery fits in all my various vehicles (with terminal adapters for my old grand prix) so I can move the batteries around if I have too..........

i was just wondering though if a too high of cranking amp could actually be bad? the group on my battery is a 34/78 1000 crank.

...I like marine cranking batteries - they seem to last forever. The one in my Duster is eight years old, rarely gets used and has a green "eye" and cranks over fast every time. My theory is that because they are built to meet USCG requirements, they are of better quality than a regular ole' car battery. I think that with car batteries, the "cold cranking amps" are like "watts" are to car stereos... mostly marketing. I'd bet the cranking amps given for a marine battery are closer to actuality. They're not that expensive, either.

Next battery I buy will be a mini Odyssey battery. 14 lbs and good cranking. Sealed battery, can be mounted any position, about $110 through Summit or similar. Cameron Tilley had one in the trunk of his race car - 7yrs old and still works fine through 12ft of cable...

I'm a fan of optima gell cells. I had the red top model one that sat outside, uncoverd, for over 10 years without any charger on it and it cranked my slant over like new.

DW: green eye isn't a good inidcation of overall battery condition - only the cell which the eye monitors. You can have a battery w/green eye and not start a car.

Well, it's a damn good clue!

Did you read the part where I said it cranks the car over fast every time? I've equipped several cars with boat batteries over the years, and have always been pleased with their service. I don't go in much for geegaw and falderal, bells and whistles and all that marketing jazz.

Oh I don't doubt the condition of your battery or boat/deep cycle units in general, but I'm ust saying its not a sure fire bet. I'd hate for someoeno buy a used batery with green eye then come yap at you because its broke

...anyone who would buy a used battery is a cheaper sum-bitch than even I am!

And I always get a battery that I can take the top off to check the fluid level..................... They'll last much longer when you can add fluid.


BTW, I kept a battery alive for 8 years by adding acid instead of water...
When they age, the plate material slowly drops to the bottom of the battery, taking some acid out of solution with it. The 8year old battery still had the correct voltage, it just eventually lost amps/cranking ability.

BTW2, thats how they get the cranking amps up, they have more thinner plates internally, more likely to short and die. The marine batteries have less thicker plates that are less likely to fall apart on you.
