Post subject:  pulling my hair out with timing

If I install the new pertronix unit i can get it to run but the mark is not even on the timing tab. Tried installing it 5 ATDC, 5 BTDC to no avail. Not much adjustability on these distributors compared to my chevelle. I assume the firing order is clockwise. Correct. And what should my idle speed be set at on a 72 variety 225 engine. I have way more time invested trying to get this car running than I would care to admit. I have the firing order as 153624 going clockwise. Is this correct. May checke TDC tomorrow wit a piston stop before I go crazy. Thanks.

Sounds like the gears in a tooth off...is the rotor pointing at number one when the piston is at TDC and the timing set at TDC?

I've move the distributor forward a tooth and back a tooth without sucess. THis is a used motor that we never heard running. Wondering if timing chain may have jumped a tooth or is stretched. Will verify TDC this morning

Did you know that there are two adjustments on these distributors? One is accessed from the bottom side of the distributor. Your correct, the firing order is 153624 clockwise.

Bob, Searching the forums after posting I found a response refering to the "second" adjustment nut. Cured the problem and it is now purring like a kitten. Thanks again to all who have responded to my MOPAR questions over the past few weeks. :D

those that want more adjustment on your timing can take the adjuster off a later model distributor. it will give about 110 deg of adjustment.
