Hi

this weekend i removed the dist from mi Dodge Coronado ( a slant sixer here, in argentina), since there was a big backfire from the carb, and i thank it could be related to ignition timing.

So i get at TDC on cylnumber 1, locate the rotor pointing to number 1 cyl ,etc, etc, rewire all the spark plugs ,....

When i tried to turn on the ignition key, nothing, the car won't start. Then i check for spark from the coil..... NO SPARK.

The coil and dist were working before i removed all the parts, so they ARE operative

I think it's a bad ground on my distributor.

The question:
çAnyone knows where does the DIST get grounded EXACTLY ??

I have breaker points., NO HEI.

I think it gets grounded on the bracket that holds it to the block .......

Can the oild act as a dielectric ??? i ask that since there was too much OIL/GREASE around the dist when i removed from the block ......

should i clean the area and try to reattach the DIST ?¿¿

THX!!!!!!

You could have a bad ground, yes it grounds through the bolt as you thought.

Check the wire from the coil to the points. They commonly break inside the distributor because of the flexing action caused by the vacuum advance pod. You will not see the break in the wire, you need to test it for continuity. Be sure to flex it and push, pull, bend, and twist that wire while testing.

Ha! back in 72 when chrysler fevre argentina started to install EI on our dodges, and even today, you'll find people whom retrofits points cuz they say that EI is "bad" for the engine. Can you imagine trying to sell a pertronix or a MSD to this people?
