My distributor has a bracket under it that limits the amount of turning it can do. It is slotted and the distributor lock bolt goes through it.The most timing advance I can get is about 15 degrees. I would like to get 20-30 degrees. How does that slotted bracket thing come off the bottom of the distibutor? If removed how would you lock the distributor in place?

The other end of the bracket (where it bolts to the underside of the distributor with another 7/16" bolt) is also slotted, so by shifting the bracket relative to the distributor body, you can get the adjustment you need. The 7/16" size of the bolt makes it hard to find the right distributor wrench to do the job without removing the dist from the engine; a Vim V-103 is such a tool.

You gotta ba crapping me! You mean underneath the distributor there is another bolt to loosen and adjust the bracket? For Gods sake I can barely see the distributor down on that side of the engine, let alone get under it and adjust it...haha I will go out and have a looksy from below

There is a guard on the lower side of the distributor. There is no way to see the bolt in question without pulling the distributor

Ya gotta get one of these. (number V103). You'll probably have to beg and plead with the company to sell you just one, as I did, but it's a terrific tool to have. Makes adjusting the timing much easier.
