I've tried air shocks several times, but always had the problem that they leaked air no matter what I did; then they rusted through quickly. Offhand, I can't see how they would cause studs to break unless they went flat and bottomed out - that could cause a pretty good impact(I've broken shock mounts), but wheel studs?

I doubt that air shocks are at fault here. I don't use them, but for other reasons. I suspect that the timing here is coincidental.
Wheel studs fall prey to combinations of age, neglect, and abuse. Overtightening whether from well intentioned ignorance or haste is probably the most common. Few of us are original owners, so who knows what the poor car has been through in the past?
Those of us with left-hand threads on half the lugs know the scenario well: "This @#$% thing won't budge ... Hey, what's this L on the lug mean? ..." Even if the stud doesn't break at that time, it has been stressed beyond its elastic limit, and it's just a matter of time.
