Post subject: | Help with 62 Trans Torque converter on engine swap |
Hello all, I am in the middle of an engine swap from a '62 170 to a '62 225. I didn't have a hoist to get the engine out of the car wtih, so I used a forklift. That meant getting the transmission out with the engine in 1 piece wasn't really something I could tackle. so my 170 transmission is still in place. I have a few questions: 1--Torque converter: my 170 torque converter looks different than the 225. It has 4 small bars each at 90 degree increments (counter weights of some kind?), while the 225 does not have these. I was going to put the 225 torque converter on because there are several gnarled up teeth on the 170 converter. Can I substitute this in? OR should I look for something else? There are several converters lying around at the shop where we are doing this. 2--Is there any harm in using the 170 transmission instead? SSD has said there are shift point differences and clutch differences, but that it shouldn't make a huge difference. I just want to be sure I'm not messing up here by not pulling the trans. Thanks! The 225 trans' valve body will be calibrated for the 225, but as you noted, the differences aren't huge. No problem swapping the torque converter. You mentioned the '62 trans is a super low miles unit, so that's probably the biggest incentive to use it. |
