Post subject:  62 Idler Arm Questions

I hate to double post (.com and .org) but I was getting no response on .com. Anyways:

Everything seems to be tight in my front end except the idler arm bushing at the K-member end.
Couple of questions: Is it possible that it just needs tightened? Can I replace just the bushing itself instead of the whole arm?

I've read that you have to jack up the engine a little to get access but it looks to me that on the 62 there's enough room to get at the nut.

This seems to be the norm and I have owned a '64, '65 and a '66. This may be the reason they went to the thru bolt style on the '68 and later cars.

It really shouldn' be loose, but it's tough to do too much about it, especially once the bushing is wallered out. There used to be kits to convert this floppy bushing to a roller bearing. They show up on eBay from time to time.

Thanks for the replies. I picked up a kit to convert it to bearings from Ken's Automotive in Chilliwack, BC, Canada. 604 792 7277. Apparently he's sitting on a large inventory of what he calls 'obsolete parts'. They aren't obsolete if you need them!

Now you mention it, I got a bearing conversion kit from them, too. Haven't installed it yet (haven't had the time and chance). Let us know how it goes, will you? Maybe take some pictures?
