Post subject:  Uh Oh... wierd noise after rebuild

 Ok, after new pistons, rings, rod bearings, timing chain, and a carb rebuild I buttoned it all up and fired it up.... she purrs nicely except for a slight grinding noise that seems to eminate from the vacinity of the flywheel.

It's sort of a steady white noise kind of sound with an overlapping intermitent grind. It's loud enough to hear in the cab. I don't remember that noise beibg present before the rebuild.

I pulled the lower cover off the bellhousing and took a look nothing odd in there...

I'm hoping it's not a bearing... perhaps the starter is not disengaging?

Anyone have any ideas?

If it's a manual transmission, I'd say pilot bearing (is it a bearing or a bushing??????????)

Thanks for all the suggestions folks :)

I can't see anything odd from under the inspection cover.

It's an automatic transmission. Tha repair manual was pretty adamant that the flywheel be marked and reinstalled in the same position. I may have screwed that up somehow... I was going by some old overspray that shot into the started opening.

Is the flywheel balanced or something? Could that be it? Maybe I'll just have to try in all 5 possible positions :?

If it's an automatic transmission, it has no flywheel, it has a flexplate which hooks to the torque convertor. The torque convertor has enough weight that it serves the puropose of a flywheel. I don't think the slant six requires a balanced torque convertor, but the 360 does.
