I tore apart my 65 904 - the goal being to check it out and put new seals in it and swapping the valve body with a 63 so it all can be installed later in
a pushbutton 61 valiant. Everything looks good inside except the low/reverse band and the drum it rides on - it looks like they were
slipping to the point of burning. Of course the rebuild kit does not include
this band - Is this part readily available? And what years interchange?
I did not see it on quick searches of partsamerica and autozone.
How can I tell if the drum needs to be
replaced or just cleaned? Thanks for your help.

I just had an idea - all these trans kit descriptions claim the rear
(low/reverse) band is not included because it does not wear out
in normal use. So when I tear down the '63 to grab the valve body
- I will look at the rear band and drum to see if they are in good
enough shape to reuse when rebuilding the '65.
