I have an opportunity to acquire a pair of 4.5" a-body axles for the 8.75 rear end. The only problem with them is that the splines were exposed to water and rusted on one side. In other words, half the splines are shiny and new looking, and the other half are rusty. Also, despite cleaning, a small amount of the spline material is gone, so the splines look something like the top of a mountain range! My goal is a durable, reliable ride. The axles are real cheap. Would I be buying trouble? TIA --Walt Jackson |

Sounds like you can do better than these. |

How cheap is 'real cheap'? If you can clean them up so that they mesh into the pig without binding, then I suspect they would be fine. Some minor pitting is a whole different story than heavily scaled rust that has deminished the size of the axle. Look, I'm no expert, but those axles are built for a lot more horses than a slant six will push. They would have to have been left in a bucket of water for a year or more to rust out that badly. |

The splines were rusted pretty badly, with bubbled up material filling the gap between half the splines.. I passed on the offer. Called Moser. Took delivery of a new set today. With green bearings set up for Wilwood discs, my wallet is now $435 (+ shipping) lighter. Alas! At least they installed with no difficulty. Sure look pretty. --Walt Jackson |
