Post subject: | no 3 cyl falling out |
i bought a 75 dart for $300 but the engine had no acceleration. after a new carb, new distributor, plugs wires, etc i took her to a mechanic and he told me that the no 3 cylinder is "falling out." what does that mean? could i fix it myself? would i have to pull the engine? if it happened with this cylinder is there a chance it could happen with the others? she has about 104,000 miles so if i fix this is it probable i could keep her for another 5 years as my main mode of transport? thanks |

That's an interesting way to describe low or no compression in the #3 Tell him, it can't fall out....the oil pan will catch it Then ask him whether the low compression in that cylinder is top end (Head), or bottom end (Block). If it's bad valves no need to remove engine, if it's in the cylinder block.....well, yeah it could go either way. |

Have you done a valve adjustment yet? Do the adjustment and then see if the compression improves.A search of this site should reveal about 1000 descriptions of the proper method of doing a valve adjustment. It's a common topic. If the compression problem is valve related, no engine removal is necessary. Replacing the head is easier than most new engines because it is not overhead cam. If it is no valve related, you can either just drive it till it dies or look at rebuilding. Running replacement slant sixes can often be found in junkyards for very little $$. |
