Post subject:  4 speed for '64 d100?

Hello folks,
After studying past posts I don't THE answer, so must call for help. I have been redoing my 64 d100 /6 1/2 ton shortbed, 3 speed on column (bought truck new and wore it out). Now that the engine transplant is about to go in, I am right close to deciding to pop in a 4 speed or 5 speed trannsmission. I would prefer a np445 I think, because of what I know of its gear range, and because I don't NEED a granny gear like in the 435. Posts here talk about pretty new (to me) dakotas and other trucks. DO you wizards have a feel if any 4 speed (prefer top loader, but not absloutely) will basically bolt up to the bellhousing I have? Can I use existing driveshaft? Problems?

THANKS!!!
Dennis

Ooooohboy. That's gonna be a toughie. There's a reason the A100s and A108s were never offered with a floor-shifted transmission of any variety: The amidships location of the engine means the trans is behind the front seats, aft of the engine "doghouse". So...just what kind of crazy-azz shifter linkage are we going to come up with to control a 4-speed from the driving seat, and where're we gonna put it?

(If you were doing a van rather than a truck, and you had kids, you could mount the shifter atop the trans and they could amuse themselves on long road trips by sharing the shifting job, but short of that...I can't think of a way to do a 4-speed in an A-series.)

Hey Dan - he's doing a D100 pickup not the A100 p/u!

Rock - there are a few people running a Mustang 5 speed top loader behind a slant on this list. Dart 270 comes to mind as I've seen his set-up (really sweet!!). I'm sure they will chime in. There's also another guy using a Dakota 5 speed but don't remember all the particulars. One of these applications ought to work in your p/u.

D'OH! Helps if I read correctly.

The '64 D100 was available with \6 and 4spd floorshift, so all the parts ought to be available if you find the right wrecking yard.
