well, i have the double roller timing chain and i get the gaskets tomorrow. i still need to get a degree wheel also. does the piston stop come with it or is that separate? i noticed on the /6 it has no crank bolt to turn the engine over and it looks like you use a breaker bar on the cam to achieve this (??). my priority is the timing chain, but if i am successful at degreeing the cam, i might as well tackle the cooling system and (what sounds to be a pain) the oil pan gasket. with the way the carb. is set up now, i'm hoping it will take some adjusting to get "her" running right. i'm sure you guys could do in a couple of hours what it will take me all (4) days off to do. i'll start saturday about noon so if you can, keep an eye on me. remember there is a helpless Scamp's life at stake, so if not for me, please do it for "her". also, if you have any pointers before i start, please let me know. thanks! |

My front pulley has 3 bolt holes in it. I added short grade 8 bolts to the holes so I would have something to put a wrench on to turn the engine over with.... |

You can also use a balancer bolt from a LA engine threaded into the crank |

Yes get a bolt for the crank, You want the crant to turn the cam, not the other way around. It will be more accurate with regards to chain stretch and so on. Greg |

thanks, guys! Greg, what you said about not using the cam to turn the crank makes a lot of sense to me. also, i guess it's probably best to take the spark plugs out. |

I always do it with the plugs out - it's a lot less hassle. Greg |

hey guys, well, i know it's warm outside, but i really don't want to know how warm. listening to "oldies", drinking "koolaid",... it's a good day! gotta run to get another gasket and help my dad out, but that shouldn't take long. i have the radiator, shroud, hoses, belts, battery, grill, and coolant out. it appears to me that the harmonic balancer need to come off, so... my question is it seems pretty important that i find "tdc" and leave it there before i take it off, am i right? again, if you have any suggestions, please let me know. thanks! |

It is not that important to find tdc first, but you will need to find it to set up the cam degree wheel. In fact, you need to make sure you set the engine back at TDC exactly, after you have degreed the cam and advanced it I hope. Then when you re-install the timing cover, you carefully install the balancer and check it against the timing mark on your cover. I have seen them off by 5 degrees or more. Gearhead |

| Post subject: | timing 5* off... |
hey Gearhead, 5* off would not surprise me at all. i just noticed i have three post on this timing issue, trying to get someone to chime in. seems every one is out and about enjoying the holiday. a couple guys came through for me and i winged the rest. so, if i understand you right, after i degree the cam, it can off set the timing mark on my cover? in other words, i will have my cam set up right at "tdc" and the cover may show it as maybe 5* advanced or retarded...correct? like i said on my other post, i was really surprised to see how loose the chain was! i can't wait to see what a difference it will make. one worry i have is that i didn't notice the marks on the small gear key, so i didn't notice where the gear was set at. now i guess all i can do is try to set them even as possible by eye. now would be a good time to put a different cam in.... i really do like upgrading my car, but i don't want to get to the point where i'm getting 12 mpg.. after i get through this venture i want to take the head off and maybe open up the cooling like you did being i live in Tucson. i also want to have the head shaved, cleaned up, and put on a new head gasket. but first i just want to get it running right, get the carb. tuned in, and get my a/c working again. thanks. |
